Does anyone know what the purpose of a hitting coach is?

Is it to tell the player what he is doing wrong when he’s in a slump? Or is it just to look important and cash a paycheck? You would think that with all the video available today, a hitting coach would be able to see what a batter is doing wrong and tell him about it so he can correct it. Or are their egos to big to listen to the coach anymore?
