you don't just throw $$$ away - he would sign with another team even at minimum salary and we're still paying for it (whether or not they buy out the rest of his contract). If they can get even some prospects back in trade, it's better business. Baseball is a business after all - and teams are in it to make profits while players are in it to make the biggest, outrageous contracts they can.
