What I don't understand

Yankees pitchers only pitch to the hitters only 2 times around the batting order. If they happen to go longer and in a close game when the starter gets into trouble why do the Yankees bring ina middle tier reliever instead of a big gun to slam the door on a potential big inning? the 2nd tier pitcher always seems to give up runs and the Yankees bat can't catch up.
