With the Steinbrenner Bros. at the helm, they show a lack of prowess that their old man had at going after a needed player, ie: Corbin, Cole( the first time), Ohtani, etc. George would always get his man!
The Boss didn't have to deal with revenue sharing and the luxury tax until the very end of his tenure. Those free spending days are long GONE with the current Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Plus, Cole was insistent in going to college at UCLA, so the Yankees had no chance of signing him out of high school, and in regards to trading with the Pirates for him, you have to ask yourself if you'd be comfortable not having Miggy & Red Thunder plus.
And I totally disagree with your opinion on the Steinbrenner sons. I suggest you buy the recently published book, "Inside The Empire" by Bob Klapisch & Paul Solotaraf, and go right to chapter 7 "Night School". That chapter alone will prove you wrong that they have a lack of dedication to the Yankees organization that they own. It's a young man's game nowadays, and even though the book states that the Astros & Dodgers beat the Yankees to the punch, in Player Development. No team can match their investment and dedication to PD, and they are doing exactly that today.
Because of what I read in this book, I am confident that the Yankees are in GREAT hands in the long run, as long as they don't have a change in heart and decide someday to sell the team. If that ever happens, pray James Dolan never buys them, which almost happened in 1998 (chapter 8, "Nothing Personal, It's Strictly Business"
. Which is the SCARIEST chapter in this book!!
