PITTSBURGH -- A scary situation unfolded in the Yankees' 7-5 win over the Pirates on Friday night at PNC Park, as a hard line drive struck reliever Anthony Misiewicz in the head in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Misiewicz, who entered in relief of Gerrit Cole to begin the frame, had two on and two outs when Pirates leadoff hitter Ji Hwan Bae stepped to the plate. On a 1-2 breaking ball, Bae connected for a 100.6 mph liner that struck Misiewicz in the left side of his head. The left-hander fell flat on the ground and rolled over in pain.
“I saw the ball going through to him and I saw his face, too, so I got a little bit of shock,” Bae said. “I was just feeling really sorry about it. It was an accident. Nothing we can do. Just praying.”
Update on Anthony Misiewicz: Anthony is alert and oriented. He was assessed by Pittsburgh team doctors and was transported to Allegheny General Hospital where he will undergo further testing.[
