MLB commissioner Rob Manfred could cancel more games if a deal is not reached by Tuesday, sources told The Athletic. The first two series of the 2022 regular season were already canceled. The league and Major League Baseball Players Association continue to talk as the lockout, which began on Dec. 2, has extended more than three months.
Players had negotiated with MLB and owners for nine straight days before Manfred announced the cancelation of regular-season games and the delay of Opening Day just after the league’s self-imposed 5 p.m. ET deadline on March 1. Major matters such as the competitive balance tax thresholds, the minimum salary, and the size of a new pre-arbitration bonus pool leave the sides with a significant distance between their proposals.
