maybe I'm looking through rose-colored glasses - but my take was different. Gerrit is an intelligent guy who always thinks through his answers and is usually prepared. He is also a member of the Executive Committe for the PA and has to be careful of any answers because he is representing every pitcher. His grip on the ball is affecting his release and command but spin rate is not down that much - weather conditions (heat/ humidity, dampness) all contribute. Not saying that he didn't try it - coming from Houston anything is possible. Thinking many of the pitchers were using a mixture of rosin & sunscreen which is what MLB should have considered or bring in a ball similar to the ones used in Japan that allows pitchers to grip the ball without effect ing spinrate.
That's my thought so time to agree to disagree. Guess I will be the eternal optimist
