Yankees' Brian McCann clears waivers, could be traded

August 08, 2016 04:55PM
He still has that no trade clause, so I guess we'll see what happens.

New York Yankees catcher Brian McCann cleared waivers Sunday and is now eligible to be traded this month.

The Yankees' metamorphosis in team philosophy and makeover will officially be complete once McCann is dealt. With the impending retirements of Mark Teixeira and Alex Rodriguez preceded by trades of Carlos Beltran, Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller, McCann is one of the few veterans remaining on the roster.

McCann still has $34 million to go on the five-year, $85-million contract — with an option for a sixth season at $15 million — he signed in 2013, so it’s not surprising he went unclaimed on waivers.

The power-hitting catcher is hitting .233 with 15 home runs and 44 RBIs this season. He was a seven-time All-Star in his nine seasons with the Braves and hit a career-high 26 home runs last season with the Yankees.
