The 18-year-old has been clocked as high as 95 mph with his fastball but traditionally sits in the 91-94 range. His curveball is his premier secondary offering, a pitch Yankees evaluators project to be plus in time, which will pair nicely with what should be an above-average slider that dives away from right-handed batters. Lai also utilizes a changeup that has shown some promise but its present effectiveness has been inconsistent.

Lai made three appearances for Chinese Taipei at the U18 Baseball World Cup in Japan last September and struck out 14 batters across seven innings, allowing just three hits and one run. Maybe most impressively, he walked just one hitter in that span, helping lead the club to a bronze medal. With a signing bonus of $872,500, the 6-foot righty will receive one of the highest commitments for a pitcher in his class.

Cabrera is being promoted to the Yankees. McMahon is going on the IL with an ear/throat infection.

Cabrera is hitting .397 with a .967 OPS and 3 HRs and 11 RBI in June. This season, he’s hitting .385 with a .965 OPS vs LHPs.

Cabrera hasn’t played in a major game since fracturing his ankle on a slide into home on May 12, 2025. The always bubbly Cabrera will surely be filled with even more joy when he joins the Yankees today.
