What appeared to be nothing more than a rare intradivision trade between heated rivals might actually have turned into something much more. Elmer Rodríguez is making sure of that.

The Yankees' No. 3 prospect extended his nearly spotless start to the campaign by striking out six over 5 2/3 scoreless frames in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's 4-1 win over Syracuse on Wednesday at NBT Bank Stadium. Rodríguez threw first-pitch strikes to 17 of the 21 batters he faced and tossed a season-high 80 pitches (49 strikes) to pick up his first win of the year.

The 22-year-old faced little traffic during his longest outing of the season, most of which came in the opening frame. Rodríguez allowed a single to Ryan Clifford (NYM No. 4) and hit Ronny Mauricio with a pitch before escaping trouble by inducing a double play. The righty cruised from there, working around a pair of walks and an infield single by Vidal Bruján over his final 4 2/3 innings to complete his first scoreless outing of 2026.

Rodríguez relied heavily on his sinker and four-seam fastball, throwing the offerings 63.8 percent of the time, a few points higher than the 55.4 percent he averaged coming into the game. The Puerto Rico-born hurler generated nine whiffs on 36 swings, continuing an early-season trend that has featured fewer strikeouts in favor of more efficiency.

After finishing second in the Minors last season with 176 K's -- averaging 10.6 per nine to go along with a 29 percent K rate -- Rodríguez has fanned 13 through 15 2/3 innings in three starts for the RailRiders.
Rodríguez's path, which has taken him from Boston's fourth-round pick in 2021 to a Top 100 prospect (No. 74) with the New York, took an interesting twist during the 2024 Winter Meetings. The 6-foot-4, 177-pounder was dealt to the Bronx in exchange for Carlos Narvaez and international bonus pool money.
