The Yankees designated outfielder Randal Grichuk for assignment on Wednesday, a somewhat surprising pivot as they created roster space for No. 3 prospect Elmer Rodríguez to make his Major League debut.

Grichuk, 34, had been a target of the Yankees' front office dating back several years. He signed late in Spring Training and won an Opening Day roster spot as a bench outfielder, with his playing time envisioned mostly against left-handed pitching.

In 16 games, Grichuk batted .194 (6-for-31) with four doubles and two RBIs, but he was beginning to see results after starting his Yankees career hitless through his first 15 at-bats.

The move offers more potential playing time to Jasson Domínguez, especially with designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton having been placed on the injured list Tuesday with a right calf strain.
Domínguez has struggled at the Major League level against left-handed pitching, but he saw results this year with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he was 7-for-18 (.389) with three doubles and a homer facing southpaws.

It also keeps infielder Max Schuemann -- who was recalled from Triple-A on Tuesday -- on the roster as the Yankees await Anthony Volpe’s return from a Minor League rehab assignment, potentially as soon as Friday.

Volpe, who did not appear in Spring Training games while recovering from left shoulder surgery performed in October, is scheduled to play again for Double-A Somerset on Wednesday.

Elmer Rodríguez will join the Yankees and make his Major League debut on Wednesday afternoon against the Rangers, manager Aaron Boone said on the “Talkin’ Yanks” podcast.

The 22-year-old Rodríguez is the organization’s No. 3 prospect, and the No. 72 prospect in all of baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. He was off to a strong start at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, posting a 1.27 ERA across four starts.

Rodríguez will be claiming a rotation spot vacated on Sunday, when the Yankees optioned right-hander Luis Gil to Triple-A after a rocky start against the Astros in Houston.

Will Warren had been originally announced as the Yankees’ scheduled starter for the Texas series finale. A source indicated Warren is healthy and will start during the club’s upcoming homestand against the Orioles.

Boone also said the Yankees will recall infielder Max Schuemann from Triple-A on Tuesday, the corresponding move as Giancarlo Stanton lands on the injured list with a right calf strain.

Yankees call up Domínguez from Triple-A (9 replies)

The Yankees are calling up outfielder Jasson Domínguez, according to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand. The club has not confirmed.

The 23-year-old outfielder has an .893 OPS, three home runs and eight stolen bases in 24 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Despite a strong Spring Training, Domínguez was optioned to the Minors on March 20.

With Giancarlo Stanton missing his second straight game due to right calf tightness on Sunday, it’s possible that Domínguez could be replacing Stanton on the MLB roster. In 123 games with the Yankees last season, Domínguez had a .719 OPS, 10 home runs and 23 stolen bases.
